Was the SAVE deadline extended?

Short answer: no. What did change today is the autopay discount deadline.

As of September 29, 2026: there is no general extension of the SAVE deadline. A different deadline was extended today: the 1% autopay interest discount, now open until December 31, 2026.1,2

Your SAVE deadline is still 90 days

Each borrower has their own deadline: 90 days from the date on their notice. Notices go out in waves and the last ones should be sent before the end of 2026, which puts the last deadlines around the end of March 2027.3,4

The autopay discount was extended

The Department of Education extended enrollment for the temporary 1% interest rate discount: borrowers who sign up for autopay by December 31, 2026, or already have it, keep the reduced rate through June 30, 2028.1,2 If you’re leaving SAVE, putting your new plan on autopay is an easy saving.

If your application is pending when your deadline hits

Keep the dated confirmation of your studentaid.gov application: it proves you asked in time. Note: at MOHELA, switching plans ends your SAVE forbearance even before your 90 days are up, so payments start.5
